The Orca Camp & Explorer is one of our expedition programs developed specifically for young people to experience nature in an intensive and personal way. We created a package for students, graduates, postgraduates, young at heart and adventurers which is affordable and focuses on combining wildlife, nature and science. For many years Patagonia Project has been organising this trip to places which are usually reserved for international top photographers and film teams. In Punta Norte at the Península Valdés you observe the unique hunting behaviour of the Orcas. On the beach up to 13 of the local Orcas (currently there are listed 24 animals) prey on young see lions and elephant seals. You identify the animals by photo and video id-recording and analyse the collected information later together with the scientists. The project tour takes place exactly at the climax of the hunt which is closely connected to phases of the moon, water level and the first swimming attempts of the young sea lions.
At the second part of the trip you follow the footsteps of Charles Darwin. First you visit a colony of penguins at the sanctuary of Cabo dos Bahias where more than 80,000 Magellanic penguins breed. Furthermore you can observe guanacos, maras (pampa rabbits) and Darwin Ostriches. Afterwards the expedition continues to Ría Deseado and to the Island of penguins. There you meet another huge colony of Magellanic and Rockhopper penguins. Of course you can also find sea birds that are associated with penguins such as skunks and Dolphin gulls. Another highlight is the observation of the rare Gray cormorant. The trip is completed by a hike through the river bed of the fjord of Ría Deseado which is strongly influenced by the tides. At the estuary Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins can be seen frequently.
Itinerary
When choosing the Orca Explorer you will be accommodated in double rooms. When booking the Orca Camp you will stay in simple chalets on shared basis.
Day 1: Arrival in Patagonia
Reception at the airport Trelew in Patagonia. Afterwards transfer to Puerto Pirámides which takes about two hours.
Day 2-8: The Orcas of Peninsula Valdés
Early in the morning you drive approximately one hour across the Península Valdés scientists of PNOR (Punta Norte Orca Research) at the lookout station at Punta Norte. There you remain three hours before the high tide until another three hours after high tide in order to be able to observe the activities of the orcas. Thereby you experience the work of the scientists of the orca project and of the nature conservation authority of the province of Chubut closely. Several observers have taken position along the coastline and are scanning the ocean through their binoculars. When orcas are sighted an announcement is made via radio. Afterwards the animals are identified. It is a unique highlight when the orcas practice their hunting techniques.
Very often you can watch the orcas patrolling the beach in order to check if young sea lion pups are playing in the surf. What everybody is really waiting for is the chance to observe the orcas when they use their spectacular hunting techniques to catch a pup off the beach which is called an “intentional stranding” by researchers.
Besides the orcas and the large colonies of sea lions which are nursing their young pups at this time of the year, you are often able to see various other coastal residents at Punta Norte such as foxes, armadillos, various sea bird species and turkey vultures. At days when the orcas do not show up near the hunting beaches or due to weather conditions, alternative programs are offered. In each day snorkelling with the sea lions in Puerto Pirámides, which count at this time of the year about 1000 pups, a kayak trip at Golfo Nuevo and a bike ride across the peninsula are reserved. These trips are organized from Puerto Pirámides and are planned on short notice depending on weather and wind conditions. It may happen that for organisational issues the group will be divided.
Day 9: Drive to Camarones
Approximately 350 km drive at the Argentinian highway to the protected area of Cabo Dos Bahias. Nowhere else you can observe Patagonia’s animals like maras (pampa rabbits) and guanacos in a better way. On the way stop in Trelew to visit the Museum of Paleontology “Egidio Feruglio”. After arriving at Camarones you are free to explore the small town. As it is rarely visited by tourists the city disposes only of a simple infrastructure which is however sufficient to get to the remote colonies of animals. Overnight in Camarones.
Day 10: At Cabo Dos Bahias National Park
The Cabo Dos Bahias National park is worth a visit. A part from the beautiful landscapes it is home of a huge colony of Magellanic penguins which you visit on a day trip. A part from penguins you also encounter best opportunities to observe other animals such as guanacos, maras, armadillos, foxes or Darwin Ostriches.
Day 11: On Darwin’s trails
On Charles Darwin’s trails you continue your journey 550 km southwards. Here, Darwin moored the HMS Beagle on 23rd December 1833. In the estuary of the Ría Deseado he discovered a remarkable biodiversity which encouraged him to stay in order to continue his studies. Arrival and overnight in Puerto Deseado.
Day 12 Ria Deseado
Excursion by boat in the estuary. There you have the opportunity to observe many sea birds and the Commerson’s dolphins which are also called mini orcas because of their size of about one meter. They are one of the smallest species among whales and dolphins in the world and only live in two geographically separate areas in the Southern Hemisphere.
As of late there have also been spotted Chilean dolphins in the river. On the way you make a visit at Bird Island where colonies of sea gulls, cormorants and penguins breed.
Day 13: The Island of Penguins
Visit of the northernmost and only accessible colony of Rockhopper penguins and of around 60,000 Magellanic penguins. If you are lucky you furthermore encounter elephant seals, sea lions, skuas, cormorants, Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins. Bird lovers will be happy about more than 136 different bird species which we were able to observe until now. Of outstanding beauty is the Gray cormorant with its steel blue eyes. On the island there are also the remains of a 18th century sea lion factory and the centennial.
Day 15: Bird watching in the estuary
Observation of Red-legged cormorants, Grey cormorants, Rock cormorants, flamingos, night herons and different raptors from the land. The rest of the day is free at leisure. Optionally, you can go on more boat trips or visit an “Estancia”, a cattle ranch.
Day 15: Departure
Today you leave the paradise. Transfer to the airport in the early morning.

Diese Expeditionsreise wurde speziell für junge Leute entwickelt um die Natur auf besonders intensive und persönliche Weise kennen zu lernen. Wir haben ein Programm für Studenten, Absolventen, Doktoranten, Junggebliebene und Abenteurer geschaffen, welches bezahlbar ist und Tiere, Natur und Wissenschaft kombiniert. Seit vielen Jahren organisiert Patagonia Project diese Reise an Orte, die für gewöhnlich nur von internationalen Top-Fotografen und Videoteams besucht werden. In Punta Norte auf der Península Valdés beobachten Sie das einmalige Jagdverhalten der Orcas. Hier machen bis zu 13 der dort lebenden Orca (derzeit sind 24 Tiere gelistet) am Strand Jagd auf junge Seelöwen und Seeelefanten. Per Foto- und Video-ID-Aufnahmen werden einzelne Tiere identifiziert und die gesammelten Informationen zusammen mit den Forschern ausgewertet. Die Projektreise findet genau zum Höhepunkt der Jagd statt, die eng an Mondphasen, Wasserstand und die ersten Schwimmversuche der jungen Seelöwen gebunden ist.
Im zweiten Teil der Projektreise folgen Sie den Spuren Darwins und besuchen zunächst eine Pinguinkolonie im Schutzgebiet Cabo dos Bahias. Hier brüten 80.000 Magellanpinguine. Weiterhin können Guanakos, Maras (Pampashasen) und Darwin-Strauße beobachtet werden. Danach geht die Expedition weiter zum Ría Deseado und zur Pinguininsel. Dort treffen Sie auf eine weitere große Kolonie von Magellan- und Felsenpinguinen. Natürlich findet man hier auch die mit den Pinguinen assoziierten Seevögel wie Raubmöwen und Blutschnabel-Möwen. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt ist die Beobachtung des seltenen Grauen Rotfuß-Kormorans. Abschließend wandern Sie durch das Flussbett des von Gezeiten gespeisten Fjordes Ría Deseado, an dessen Mündung auch häufig Jakobiter und Peale Delfine zu beobachten sind.
Reiseverlauf
Bei der Unterkunftsvariante Orca Explorer übernachten Sie in Doppelzimmern, bei der Unterkunftsvariante Orca Camp übernachten in einfachen Unterkünften in Mehrbettzimmern.
1. Tag: Ankunft in Patagonien
Empfang am Flughafen Trelew in Patagonien. Danach erfolgt der Transfer nach Puerto Pirámides. Die Fahrt dorthin dauert gute 2 Stunden. Übernachtung in Puerto Pirámides.
2. bis 8. Tag: Die Orcas der Peninsula Valdes
Am frühen Morgen fahren Sie ca. eine Stunde quer über die Halbinsel Valdés um mit dem Forscherteam der PNOR (Punta Norte Orca Research) Stellung am Aussichtspunkt in Punta Norte zu beziehen. Dort muss man gut drei Stunden vor Höchststand der Flut angelangt sein und weiterhin bis zu drei Stunden nach der Flut verharren um die Aktivitäten der Orcas beobachten zu können. Dabei erleben Sie die Arbeit der Forscher des Orca-Projektes und der Naturschutzbehörde der Provinz Chubut ganz nah.
Entlang der Küste haben Beobachter Stellung bezogen und suchen mit Ferngläsern das Meer ab. Sobald Orcas gesichtet werden, erfolgt es eine Meldung per Funk. Danach werden die Tiere identifizieren. Ein besonderes Highlight ist es, wenn die Tiere ihre Jagdtechniken praktizieren. Man kann die Wale sehr oft dabei beobachten, wie sie entlang der Küste patrouillieren um zu prüfen, ob junge Seelöwen in den Wellen spielen. Worauf wirklich jeder wartet, ist die Gelegenheit einen Schwerwal dabei zu beobachten, wie er seine spektakuläre Jagdtechnik (von Forschern als „absichtliches Stranden“ bezeichnet) nutzt um ein Jungtier vom Strand zu holen. Neben den Schwertwalen und ihrer Beute, die aus Seelöwen und Seeelefanten besteht, sind auch Füchse und Gürteltiere sowie Truthahngeier zu beobachten. An Tagen, wo sich die Orcas nicht zeigen um an den Stränden zu jagen, oder wenn es die Wetterbedingungen nicht zulassen, werden Alternativprogramme angeboten. An jeweils einem Tag ist das Schnorcheln bzw. Freitauchen mit Seelöwen, die zu dieser Jahreszeit rund 1000 Jungtiere zählen, in Puerto Pirámides vorgesehen, eine Kajakfahrt im Golfo Nuevo sowie eine Radtour auf der Península Valdés. Abhängig von den Wetter- und Windverhältnissen werden diese Ausflüge recht spontan von Puerto Pirámides aus organisiert. Es kann vorkommen, dass aus organisatorischen Gründen die Gruppe aufgeteilt wird.
9. Tag: Fahrt nach Camarones
350 km Fahrt auf der argentinischen Autobahn Richtung Süden bis zum Schutzgebiet Cabo dos Bahias. Nirgendwo sonst kann man Tiere Patagoniens, z.B. Maras (Pampahasen) und Guanakos besser beobachten als hier. Auf dem Weg Zwischenstopp in Trelew um das paläontologische Museum Egidio Feruglio zu besichtigen. Nach der Ankunft in Camarones verbringen Sie den Nachmittag mit der Erkundung des kleinen Ortes. Da nur wenig vom Tourismus besucht, ist lediglich eine einfache Infrastruktur vorhanden, die aber vollkommen ausreicht um in diese abgelegenen Tierkolonien zu gelangen. Übernachtung in Camarones.
10. Tag: Unterwegs im Nationalpark Cabo dos Bahias
Cabo Dos Bahias ist ein sehenswerter Nationalpark. Neben landschaftlichen Reizen besticht er mit einer großen Magellanpinguinkolonie, die auf einem Tagesausflug besucht wird.
Neben den Pinguinen haben Sie hier beste Möglichkeiten auch andere Tiere wie Guanakos, Maras, Gürteltiere, Füchse und auch den Darwin-Strauß zu beobachten.
11. Tag: Auf den Spuren Darwins
Auf den Spuren von Charles Darwin setzen Sie Ihre Reise 550 km Richtung Süden fort. Darwin ging hier am 23. Dezember 1833 mit der HMS Beagle vor Anker. Im Flusslauf des Ría Deseado fand er eine bemerkenswerte Biodiversität, welche ihn dazu veranlasste, zu verweilen um an seinen Studien weiter zu arbeiten. Ankunft und Übernachtung in Puerto Deseado.
12. Tag: Der Ría Deseado
Exkursion per Boot im Flusslauf. Dabei können Sie viele Seevögel sowie die seltenen Jakobiter Delfine beobachten, die mit einer Größe von nur einem Meter aussehen wie Mini-Orcas. Damit gehören sie zu einer der kleinsten Wal- und Delfinarten weltweit und sind in zwei geografisch voneinander getrennten Regionen der Südlichen Hemisphäre beheimatet.
Seit Kurzem konnten auch Weißbauchdelfine (auch Chilenische Delfine genannt) im Fluss beobachtet werden. Unterwegs statten Sie der Vogelinsel einen Besuch ab, wo Möwen, Kormorane und Pinguine brüten.
13. Tag: Pinguininsel
Besuch der nördlichsten und einzig zugänglichen Kolonie von etwa 8.000 Felsenpinguinen und ca. 60.000 Magellanpinguinen. Weiterhin begegnen Ihnen mit etwas Glück Seeelefanten, Seelöwen, Raubmöwen, Kormorane, Jakobiter und Peale Delfine. Vogelfreunde dürften sich über die bisher 136 verschiedene Vogelarten freuen, die wir bisher beobachten konnten. Besonders der Graukormoran sticht mit seinen stahlblauen Augen hervor. Auf der Insel gibt es ebenfalls eine Seelöwenfabrik aus dem 18. Jahrhundert sowie einen hundertjährigen Leuchtturm.
14. Tag: Vogelbeobachtung im Flusslauf
Beobachtung von Rotfußkormoranen, Graue Kormoranen, Felsenkormoranen, Flamingos, Nachtreihern und verschiedenen Greifvögeln von Land aus. Der Rest des Tages steht zur freien Verfügung. Optional sind Bootstouren möglich oder der Besuch einer Estancia, einer Rinderfarm.
15. Tag: Abreise
Heute verlassen Sie das Paradies. Transfer zum Flughafen am frühen Morgen.
